These are especially useful for growing crops where the existing soil is poor or waterlogged, but are also ideal for patio cultivation. You can but plastic kits, all made from recycled plastic – with sides that clip together quickly and easily; these are ideal for you To their beds permanently, as they can be rapidly dismantled. The best kits have twin-walled sides, which help to prevent the compost from overheating or cooling excessively during very hot or very cold periods. Or you can build a more lasting structure from concrete, brick, stone or sleepers. Beds with timber sides are cheap and quick to construct, but the wood will rot after a few seasons.
To make life easier, no bed should be wider than you can reach from each side while standing on the ground. The optimum depth is 30cm for large rooted crops like brassicas and 15cm for salads, leaf vegetables and dwarf beans.

You will need a position that receives sun for most of the day to give you the widest selection, but even a spot in light shade can be used for growing blackberries, and a few herbs, for example mint and parsley.
